Despite the red light, a driver wanted to cross an unguarded railway crossing in Burgkirchen. The car was rammed by the train and completely torn apart. Miraculously, the 48-year-old survived the collision and was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
The sight of the crashed car gives you goosebumps. The red Peugeot was torn into several pieces when it collided with the train and the side door and passenger seat remained attached to the train carriage. The 48-year-old driver wanted to cross a level crossing on Weikerdinger Landesstraße (L1056) in the town of St. Georgen an der Mattig (municipality of Burgkirchen) with his car on Thursday around 2:15 p.m. Although the traffic lights were “red”, the man from Braunau would neither have slowed down nor stopped.
Traffic lights and memorial stone demolished
The 44-year-old driver of the regional train with 18 passengers saw the accident coming and immediately applied emergency braking. But a collision could no longer be prevented. The Peugeot was hit and then thrown into the red light on the other side and into a memorial cross that had been set up there. Both the traffic light and the Marterl were knocked down and severely damaged.
Emergency workers rescue the seriously injured
Emergency services from the Red Cross and the fire brigade were able to rescue the seriously injured driver from the demolished wreck. The 48-year-old was treated at the scene of the accident and then taken to the Braunau clinic.
