According to Ukrainian authorities, the Russian army has launched its third wave of attacks on the eastern Ukrainian city of Avdiivka since October 10 (see video above). “They are attacking from all sides, using a lot of infantry,” Mayor Vitaly Barabasch said on Friday.
The center of the industrial city is systematically bombed. With the exception of one access road, the city in the Donetsk region has been almost completely surrounded by Russian troops for more than a month. According to Ukrainian sources, the army has been trying to take control of the city for years. Above all, a large coking plant will be acquired.
According to their own statements, the Ukrainian troops have taken shelter behind fortifications. In the past four weeks they have lost a small amount of territory, but so far the defense seems to be holding up against the Russian forces. “There are 30 to 40 mass attacks a day in the city,” Mayor Barabasch said. According to him, Russian forces are attacking with guided bombs and, more recently, with cluster bombs.
Here you can see where the city is located.
There are still 1,350 people in the city
The Telegram account Rybar, which is close to the Russian military, confirmed the use of controversial cluster bombs. These would ‘enable the enemy’s offensives to be repulsed with even greater success’. According to the government, approximately 1,350 residents currently live in the industrial city. Before the war started in February 2022, there were more than 30,000.
Since the start of the war, Avdiivka has been fought over by Russian-backed separatists. In July 2014, it was briefly in the hands of pro-Russian separatists, armed by Moscow, before being recaptured by the Ukrainian side. Since then, the largely destroyed city has been on the front lines in eastern Ukraine and has become a symbol of resistance.
