After an incredibly long, warm autumn, winter has finally arrived. On Saturday morning, the very first snowflakes of winter fell in higher parts of Vienna’s suburbs, such as Hernals (see video above).
Next week the thermometer in the federal capital is expected to drop below zero degrees Celsius for the first time. And winter has now come to stay. This is due to a low from Russia, which has been bringing cold air from Scandinavia to the interior areas since Thursday.
But we are still far from the minus 20 degrees Celsius that has already been measured in some places in Sweden and Finland. However, the cold air causes something else: the snow line drops from more than 1000 meters into the valleys.
The snow doesn’t stay there long
However, the snow will “remain on the ground in the higher districts at most during the night from Saturday to Sunday, but even there only about a centimeter”, it said. from the geological, geophysical, climatological and meteorological service GeoSphere Austria. The sun will shine on Monday, but Mrs Holle can cause snowfall again on Tuesday.
The city of Vienna is well prepared for the white splendor: as many as 1,400 trained employees and 280 clearing and gritting trucks are ready for use and were already busy on Saturday morning.
