“In Austria, one in five women is still affected by psychological, physical and/or sexual violence. This is alarming,” warns Federal President Van der Bellen in a new video message on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
In a video released on Saturday morning on all social media channels of the ministers and departments, they expressed their support for the UN’s ‘Orange the World’ campaign against violence against women: ‘Every day, women around the world experience the most serious harms of this or their human rights,” the head of state said.
“Violence against girls and women is completely unacceptable and has no place in Austria.”
“The perpetrators are always to blame”
“Violence has many faces. Whether it concerns physical, sexual or psychological violence, in real life or online. It is independent of social status, independent of income and independent of education level. But one thing is clear: no woman or girl is to blame for something like this happening with their behavior or actions. The perpetrators are always to blame.”
The government has made more money available in the women’s budget than ever before. The resources of the other departments have also been increased.
To mark the “16 Days to End Violence against Women” from November 25 to December 10, buildings around the world will be illuminated in orange as a visible sign of solidarity with the victims of gender-based violence. The Federal Chancellery in Vienna will also be illuminated orange for 16 days.
