After danger level three had already existed in recent days, the Tyrolean avalanche warning service has declared level four in parts of Tyrol for Sunday. Those responsible appeal to winter sports enthusiasts to exercise caution and common sense.
After Saturday night brought fresh snow and it will probably continue to snow in the coming days, the avalanche warning service is counting on large amounts of new snow of 30 to 40 centimeters. Added to this are stormy winds and a weak build-up of snow cover. Avalanche level four applies to the western part of Tyrol from Sunday, which means there is great danger – the regions of Arlberg, Allgäu Alplen and western Karwendel above the tree line are particularly affected.
Minimum danger level three
“The fresh snow in combination with the widespread, extensive accumulations of wind slabs can easily cause avalanches to form or spontaneously slide, especially above the tree line,” explains Christoph Mitterer of the Tyrol Avalanche Warning Service. But the danger does not only lie in the most important precipitation areas in the west. “There is still a significant avalanche risk in many other parts of Tyrol (level 3, note),” said the expert.
He and State Security Councilor Astrid Mair warn winter sports enthusiasts to take the warning seriously and exercise great caution and restraint in the open ski area. “Because by disproportionate behavior you not only endanger yourself, but also others,” explains LR Mair. Just last Thursday, a Pole was hit by an avalanche in the Ötztal and a short time later he succumbed to his serious injuries in hospital.
