A serious water main break occurred in Vienna-Ottakring on Saturday night. Photos and videos from an observant ‘Krone’ reader reporter show the extent of the volume of water.
The affected area was Flötzersteig – Anton-Geiger-Weg and Demuthgasse. A transport pipe with a diameter of 70 centimeters broke through, according to a spokesperson for the responsible municipal service 31 (Vienna water). On the one hand, this means that although the drinking water supply for the surrounding population was not affected, on the other hand a lot of water escaped.
Basement pumped out
Wiener Wasser was informed of the burst water pipe around 1 a.m. The professional fire brigade was also present due to the burst pipe and had to pump out several cellars, among other things. “We were quite busy that night with various operations,” said fire department spokesman Gerald Schimpf.
Several bus lines closed
The Wiener Linien carriage house on Maroltingergasse was also hit. The operation of line 46 was stopped, lines 10 and 44 were operated briefly, as were bus lines 48A and 51A. The tram lines were already running as planned again in the morning.
“Larger amounts of water”
It is impossible to estimate how much water has escaped. “But if you see the damage, there must have been larger quantities.”
