Heavy Weapons Moved – Explosive Photos: North Korea Rearms Its Border

Date:

North Korea continues to make noise at its border with South Korea, apparently now stationing soldiers and heavy weapons there after a disarmament deal was canceled. South Korea says recent footage also shows North Korean soldiers rebuilding guard posts that were demolished as part of the 2018 deal.

Five years ago, North and South Korea reached a military agreement aimed at defusing tensions on the border between the two countries, which are still officially at war. Part of the agreement was that eleven guard posts would be removed at each of the heavily guarded borders.

Deal collapses after satellite launch
Last week, the deal began to crumble: As North Korea sent its first spy satellite into orbit, South Korea announced it would partially suspend the military agreement and resume aerial border surveillance. In return, North Korea declared it would terminate the agreement completely.

North Korea’s Defense Ministry said Thursday it would “withdraw measures taken to prevent military tensions and clashes in all areas such as land, sea and air and deploy armed forces and state-of-the-art military equipment in the border areas.”

South Korea wants to monitor the activities
The threat was carried out and soldiers and heavy weapons were stationed near the border with South Korea, Yonhap news agency said on Monday, citing South Korean military officials. In addition, the South Korean Ministry of Defense published photos on Monday showing North Korean soldiers rebuilding disused guard posts. South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeo’s office subsequently announced that activities near the border would be monitored.

North Korea wants to launch more satellites
There is no easing in sight: North Korea has announced that it plans further satellite launches and wants to exercise its sovereign rights, as state news agency KCNA reported, citing the North Korean Foreign Ministry.
