Scandal in hospital: man sexually abused more than 100 bodies of women

Date:

A series of shortcomings by a British hospital group allowed an employee to sexually abuse more than a hundred bodies of women and girls in more than a decade. This shocking result comes from the first part of a research report that has now been published.

Management failures and a “persistent lack of curiosity” allowed perpetrator David Fuller to continue his abuse for so long, inquiry chair Jonathan Michael said.

The former hospital repairman was already serving a life sentence for the sexually motivated murders of two young women in the 1980s when his necrophiliac crimes were exposed.

Acts committed over a period of 15 years
The 69-year-old worked at two hospitals in Kent, south-east England, from 2005 to 2020, where he abused the remains of at least 101 women and girls aged between nine and 100.

Michael spoke at a press conference in London about ‘missed opportunities’ to question employee working practices. “He routinely worked outside his contract hours and took on tasks in the mortuary that were not necessary or should not be performed by someone who, like him, has chronic back problems,” Michael said. “That was never really questioned.”

Mortuary was visited 444 times in one year
In one year, the perpetrator visited the morgue 444 times, but this happened “unnoticed and uncontrolled,” he continued. Michael called on the Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust hospital group to “consider seriously and carefully their responsibility for the weaknesses and shortcomings” and follow up on his recommendations.

The recommendations include setting up security cameras in hospital mortuaries and autopsy rooms. It is also suggested that domestic workers in these areas work in pairs.
