With a simple trick, a 60-year-old scammed almost 60,000 euros on a local internet sales platform. After years on the run, the suspect has now been arrested in Spain.
For more than six months, the 60-year-old repeatedly posted photos of drinks vending machines that he claimed he wanted to sell on the online sales platform willhaben.at.
However, that was just an illusion. Interested parties from all over Austria responded to his advertisements, told the man they intended to buy and transferred him the money he asked for.
Nearly 60,000 euros in damage
However, none of them ever received the prepaid goods. Some of those defrauded have filed criminal charges. In total, the 60-year-old is said to have stolen more than 59,000 euros with this insult between June 20, 2019 and January 31, 2020. The St. Georgen im Attergau police station took over the investigation throughout Austria and investigated all victims.
Extradition to Austria
In April 2020, a European arrest warrant was obtained through the Salzburg public prosecutor’s office. But it would take another three and a half years before the suspect could be caught. He was arrested in Spain on November 20 around 8:30 p.m. A request has been made for his extradition to Austria.
