This year’s World Climate Conference kicks off on Thursday (see also the video above), where the global community will meet to discuss ways to curb the climate crisis. About 70,000 participants are expected, making the meeting the largest climate conference ever. However, US President Joe Biden will be missing from the guests in Dubai. He is represented by Vice President Kamala Harris.
Harris will fly to the Gulf emirate from Friday to Saturday to attend the meeting. Dozens of other high-ranking U.S. government representatives from various departments and agencies will also attend, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken and climate representative John Kerry.
The American newspaper ‘New York Times’ reported a few days ago, citing government circles, that Biden skipped the climate conference (COP 28). Senior White House officials suggested that Biden was deeply concerned about the war in Gaza.
Pope also cancels
Pope Francis also had to cancel – but for health reasons. “The Pope is recovering from the flu, but on the advice of doctors he did not want to expose himself to any risk to his health. That’s why he canceled the trip,” Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin said in an interview with journalists. He will represent Francis in Dubai.
