In the southern Ukrainian region of Kherson, three people were killed by Russian shelling in the village of Sadowe, authorities said on Thursday. Two people have been killed in Russian attacks on three cities in the eastern Donetsk region, according to Ukrainian rescuers.

According to the government in Kiev, Russian forces fired six S-300 missiles at the cities of Pokrovsk, Novohrodivka and Myrnohrad in the Donetsk region. Two men were found dead from the rubble in Novohrodivka, and a child was among the three missing, according to rescuers.

The Donbass Basin was fiercely contested
According to Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, a six-month-old baby was injured in Pokrovsk, along with two boys aged 13 and 16. Accordingly, a projectile exploded in the yard of a house in which a family with two children lived. “The shelling destroyed the roof and walls of the house and the family was buried under the rubble,” Klymenko added.

The industrial region in the Donbass Basin has been one of the main battlegrounds since the beginning of the Russian invasion in February 2022. In recent weeks, fighting has focused mainly on the frontline city of Avdiivka, which is located southeast of the cities now in the area. under fire. Ukrainian military officials said Russian forces would continue trying to take control of the city.

Moscow has controlled Donetsk since 2014
Russian forces and pro-Russian separatists have controlled large parts of the Donetsk region since 2014. Donetsk is one of four areas in eastern and southern Ukraine that Moscow annexed last year without having full military control.
