As expected, the search for coalition partners is extremely difficult for the Dutch right-wing populist Geert Wilders. The chairman of the Freedom Party (PVV) emphasized a few days ago that he prefers a majority cabinet, but a minority cabinet is also not excluded. Yet the 60-year-old finds himself at a dead end.
Wilders actually wanted to be celebrated by his right-wing nationalist friends in Italy at the weekend after his clear victory in the Netherlands. A meeting of the EU group “Identity and Democracy” will take place there. The event, organized by Italy’s right-wing ruling Lega party, brings together representatives from 14 European parties, including the FPÖ. They are discussing alliances ahead of next June’s parliamentary elections.
Trip to Italy cancelled
But Wilders canceled the trip. People close to the party leader said that he wanted to devote himself fully to the difficult exploratory talks in The Hague.
‘Difficult’ is almost an understatement, because with the exception of one party, no one wants to form a coalition with the PVV. Especially because Wilders wants a referendum on the Netherlands’ departure from the EU. A Wilder government is becoming increasingly unlikely.
