The Maria Hilf pilgrimage church has stood on a hill near Guttaring for almost 400 years. Normally mercy seekers and the sick make a pilgrimage to the baroque church, but on Friday evening criminals stalked the sacred walls.
The burglars were after the decorations on the statue of the Virgin Mary in the church. “The unknown perpetrators stole gold crowns and gold and silver chains attached to the statue of the Virgin Mary,” police said. Then the burglars started tampering with the altar.
“They broke open the arched lock and stole cultural objects from the altar,” police continued. “The exact extent of the damage cannot yet be quantified.” The police are now conducting the investigation.
