They are often victims – Steirer gives “problem dogs” a second chance

Date:

Georg Resch takes in dogs with a troubled past. What he blames many pet owners for and how he works with four-legged friends.

Dog “Ossi” was just a puppy who had not harmed anyone. It bothered someone that the sheepdog barked in the garden. He put a shotgun in the young animal’s mouth and pulled the trigger.

“Ossi” survived badly injured. Just as he survived several poison attacks. But at some point, when the abuse and neglect became too much, he snapped. And had to leave immediately.

Meanwhile, the brown Staffordshire terrier “Sir” would become the evil face of the underworld in a German town, scaring opponents in dubious circles. For this, means were used that we do not know about. No one could get to the dog anymore.

Mean? “They are made that way by humans”
Today both are with the East Styrian Georg Resch – and they worship their Lord, you can see that at first glance. You, the bad guys, the dangerous ones. “They are made by people like that,” says the 37-year-old police officer, who, with his Hartberg company RG Dogs, gives problem dogs that no one wants a second chance and also trains special dogs for international troops.

His recipe? “I gain their trust.” Without that deep trust things don’t work between humans and animals, he tries to tell everyone who has problems with a dog. “But the real problem is that many people get a dog without thinking about it: they owe them patience. That they have a responsibility until the end of their lives. That they have to work with the animal.”

“You just wanted to get rid of the burden”
A family recently gave their dog to Resch: “People said he pinched. I assured them we would get this under control.” After a long discussion, the dog trainer realized that there was no solution. “People just wanted to get rid of the ‘burden’.” That always shocks him, “because it is so typical of our throwaway society. What no longer fits, goes away. The fact that it is a living being is completely emotionlessly erased from consciousness.”

He has no respect for such people: “Anyone who gives up his dog without a spark of emotion, who doesn’t give a damn what becomes of him, also abandons everyone.”

Dog trainers do a lot of crazy things
In addition, Resch dislikes the term dog trainer, “that is not correct at all in the system. Nowadays anyone can act as a trainer, without training, only with a trade permit! A lot of mischief is being done with it – and I am increasingly getting disturbed four-legged friends where some dog trainers have ‘worked’ with.” With that everything was under control.

Such as one of the most common problems – leash aggression. Resch: “There are only individual solutions. The problem usually lies with the owner. He sees another dog coming, tightens his leash, pulls his own animal towards him. He instinctively thinks, “Ah, my owner is scared, so the dog is dangerous – I’m attacking!” This is easy to solve with exercises and a lot of eye contact.”

The police officer specializes in Malinois, the Belgian sheepdog. And has a warning: “We are going to have a social problem with this breed. Because this is a working dog that prefers to be challenged 24 hours a day. No one lying on the couch. And who can become aggressive if not challenged. Many underestimate that.”

Need more feeling for house and dog
Like this: “Today, many people choose a dog based solely on its appearance, and not on characteristics typical of the breed and whether the dog fits into the family. This is how problems arise. We need more feeling for home and dog again!”
