Bisschop in Vienna – Krautwaschl: “As it was, it will never be again

Date:

The styrician diocesan bishop Wilhelm Krautwaschl mourn the victims of the terrible murder of Graz on Thursday in St. St. St. Stephen’s Cathedral. In conversation with the “Kroon” he shows in his emotional life: “I couldn’t believe it at first.”

“Krone”: Mr. Bishop, how did you experience the black Tuesday?
Wilhelm’s daughter: We celebrated a papal prize for a deserved employee when the first reports arrived. I couldn’t believe that in the beginning. Such an act with us, in the quiet Graz! I was stunned. We immediately said: we have to get involved here – with what we own. The terrible was thought in the evening that they measure parties, and people were on the location of emergency pastoral care, and together with the head of the styric crisis intervention I was on the radio: hoping to be able to help people in this way.

Graz is hit for the second time – Graz mourned ten years ago for the amocation.
I was just initiated with the bishop and fresh in function. That was also an incredible tragedy. The question of why will stay here. The words are missing.

What do you say to someone struggling with God with a view to this suffering?
Stripping is fine. Even Jesus touched God. We are people with free will, and the free will ensures a lot of beautiful, but also a lot cruel. With us, in Ukraine, in the middle and in other places in our world. But God wants to live – and that’s why we are invited to help with our means with what is now possible and sensible.

How can the church donate comfort?
The churches and religious societies are involved in crisis intervention. There are also our offers in pastoral care, in the parishes, on memorial fairs and devotions. We are there for people.

What happens in faith with victims and perpetrators?
We will be measured by our words and actions. Everyone who has tried for a good life will find admission to God. Anyone who was deeply regretted, albeit at the last minute like the shafts next to Jesus on the cross, will experience grace.

How can you return to normality?
As it was, it won’t be anymore. There are gaps, losing, breaking. It is important not to stay alone with sorrow. It is also important to maintain a loving memory. The most important thing is that the victims are not lost. We celebrated Easter and Pentecost in these weeks, the resurrection, the arrival of the Holy Spirit. And we can hope for that!
