Until December 22 – Hole discovered in the Schmitten Tunnel: the closure remains in place

Date:

Unpleasant surprise during the renovation work in the Schmitten Tunnel in Salzburg: a large hole was discovered in the tunnel ceiling. That is why the important connection in Zell am See will remain closed until December 22.

The technicians were surprised: during safety checks as part of the renovation of the Schmitten Tunnel, they discovered a large hole in the tunnel ceiling near the south portal. In concrete terms, this concerns a cavity of approximately 22 meters long and two meters wide. “No one can be responsible for us releasing the Schmitten Tunnel in this state,” said Werner David, head of the bridge construction department for the state of Salzburg.

During the renovation of the cavity, further damage to the tunnel ceiling came to light. An additional supporting structure must now be built over a length of approximately 30 meters before the tunnel can be opened again. This will last at least until December 22. The tunnel must be accessible again from December 23, at least in one lane from south to north.

Due to renovation work, the approximately 30-year-old tunnel has been closed since November 6. By 2031, around 90 million euros must be invested in the safety of the structure, especially in new escape and rescue tunnels.
