Massive snowfall has been causing enormous problems in Tyrol since last night: the Brenner motorway A13 had to be partially closed due to stuck vehicles. There were also closures and obstacles elsewhere. Power went out in several communities. There are also problems in train traffic.
The heavy snowfall on Tyrolean roads caused and continues to cause major problems. The A13 had to be closed in some places at night due to stationary vehicles. As freight traffic increased early in the morning, further disruptions eventually occurred. The B182 was also closed on Saturday morning between Brenner and Gries.
Fallen trees, snow chains required
Due to fallen trees, the B198 Lechtalstrasse between Steeg and Warth and the connection between Pfunds and Samnaun had to be closed.
In some cases snow chains were necessary – such as on the Arlberg Pass (for all vehicles) and on the B179 Fernpassstraße between Heiterwang and Reutte, on the L4 between Kramsach and Brandenberg, on the B173 between Söll and Kufstein, the B172 between Niederndorf and Reit im Wink and on the B161 between Kitzbühel and Mittersill for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes.
Major problems in rail traffic
There have also been massive disruptions to train traffic. “Sometimes we are on one track, but sometimes we are completely interrupted,” ÖBB spokesman Christoph Gasser-Mair told the “Krone” in the morning.
No trains via the Deutsches Eck
The western railway line between Imst-Pitztal and Landeck and the Karwendel railway between Innsbruck and Scharnitz were interrupted on Saturday morning. The Deutsches Eck is also closed to train traffic. “The trains will be diverted via Zell am See, which will increase travel time accordingly,” Gasser-Mair continued. There were also problems in the Brixental.
Where there are closures and obstacles, the ÖBB tries to set up a replacement rail service. However, this is not easy due to the winter road conditions. Passengers should definitely inform themselves via the ÖBB channels before starting their journey.
Power outages in several communities
The heavy snowfall also causes disruptions and power outages. “For example, in the Ötztal area a rope broke because a tree fell on our 110 kV line in the Ambach area. Our teams are already solving the problem,” Tinetz reported on Saturday morning. In some cases there were around 120 transformer stations throughout Tyrol that were not supplied due to faults.
More heavy snow is forecast for Saturday morning. These are expected to become weaker during the afternoon.
