A Catholic mass in the Philippines ended in a bloodbath on Sunday. Suddenly there was an explosion. At least four people were killed and fifty others were injured.
The four fatalities were three women and one man, it was said. The injured were taken to hospitals. The explosion at a gymnasium at Mindanao State University in Marawi city was likely caused by a homemade bomb, Army division commander Maj. Gen. Gabriel Viray said. He added: “This is an act of terror.”
Act of revenge after a raid against Islamists?
After the Philippine military reportedly killed 11 militant fighters – including Filipino IS supporters – during an operation in the southern province of Maguindanao del Sur on Friday, authorities suspect a possible revenge attack by the Islamist terrorist militia.
Marawi City is located more than 800 kilometers south of the capital Manila. The city was the scene of a five-month siege by Islamic militants in 2017, in which more than 1,200 people – including civilians – were killed. The attack left the city in ruins and led to the displacement of approximately 200,000 people.
