A 25-year-old driver drove on a snowy road in Graz on Saturday without a driver’s license, with summer tires and – as it turned out – under the influence of drugs. When police officers tried to check on him, he fled in the car, dragging a police officer several meters past the vehicle. A search ultimately led to an arrest.
The story started around 11 a.m. on Baumkirchstrasse in the Lend district of Graz. Police officers were checking a driver who was driving on snow with summer tires. Suddenly, a 25-year-old driver passed the officers at walking pace. One of them noticed that this car only had summer tires and stopped it for an inspection.
Towed several meters
It turned out that they were not actually summer tires and that they were completely worn out! When confronted, the 25-year-old suddenly revved the engine and turned the wheels. The police officer was still holding on to the half-open window when he actually took off! As a result, the man was dragged several meters along the snow-covered road. He clearly didn’t think about quitting. The driver also ignored another patrol’s attempt to stop him and fled north.
Emergency room officers eventually managed to stop the car on Göstinger Strasse. Knowing that due to various circumstances – he actually has no driver’s license and uses drugs – he had now switched seats with the passenger and denied that he was behind the wheel.
But that was of no use to him: the registration card of the car with insufficient tires and the license plates were taken away and the man was taken to the police station. He is accused of several offenses.
