At the last minute, two police officers rescued an 84-year-old woman from her burning rental apartment in Weiz. She hadn’t noticed the flaming inferno. A major operation followed in which the entire building had to be evacuated.
The fire in the pensioner’s rental apartment was discovered by a passer-by shortly before 6 p.m. When she screamed for help, two off-duty police officers intervened. The police couple tried to enter the 84-year-old’s apartment. It only opened after repeated vigorous knocking and until then she had not realized that there was a fire in her apartment.
“I rang the doorbell and knocked, while my girlfriend called the emergency number,” reports police officer Sebastian Krenn. “The balcony was already on fire and within a short time the entire apartment would be completely filled with smoke.”
22 tenants stayed in the hotel
More than fifty firefighters brought the fire under control and helped evacuate the building. Ultimately, temporary accommodation in a hotel was found for all 22 tenants. The cause of the fire had not yet been determined on Sunday. Police said there was significant damage to the retiree’s apartment and other apartments.
“It was actually a blessing in disguise. The neighbor discovered the fire in time. And we were able to intervene because we happened to become witnesses. “It is difficult to imagine how it could have turned out differently,” the two rescuers say happily.
