Well boom! Brit failed the driving test 59 times

Date:

Only on the 60th attempt did a candidate in England pass the theoretical driving test. In total, the learner driver in the town of Redditch near Birmingham had to pay £1,380 (1,608 euros) in fees – a theory test costs £23.

“There is no doubt that it is a difficult test,” said Camilla Benitez, director of AA driving schools, according to the BBC. “It’s quite easy to underestimate the theory exam.”

Praise for effort
At the same time, she praised the candidate’s efforts as great. Only once the theory has been mastered can novice drivers in England get behind the wheel for practical lessons.

GB exam consists of 50 questions
The exam consists of 50 questions, each with multiple possible answers. A minimum of 43 correct answers are required to pass. This is followed by a video test in which the possible danger must be identified in 14 traffic situations.

By comparison, in Austria the pool of exam questions for Class B contains a total of 1,486 questions. A maximum of 40 questions are asked per module. The computer test for the car driver’s license contains a maximum of 80 questions (as multiple choice questions), including in-depth questions (general basic knowledge + vehicle class B module).

According to the UK Department for Transport, only 44 percent of learner drivers recently passed their theory test on the first attempt. Fifteen years ago that was still 65 percent. The 59 failed attempts by the novice driver, whose age and gender were not known, are a record in the first half of 2023, the BBC reported on Monday.

However, the ‘advantage’ over others is only small. One examinee in the city of Hull failed 57 times, one in Guildford 55 times and another in Tunbridge Wells 53 times. But that is still far behind the record from 2012, when a student driver failed 92 times.
