The general secretary of ELA, Mitxel Lakuntzaconsidered the reading of the Basque employers “interested” confebasque to demand policies that promote immigration before the “great retirement” that will occur in 20-30 years. According to Lakuntza, “Confebask talks about the future not to mention the present”, which in his opinion goes through “uncertainty”, “devaluation of wages” and working conditions that are “not good”.

“What’s the problem? Will there be no workers? That depends on the working conditions, if the working conditions are good, there will be no shortage of workers,” he explained in an interview with Radio Euskadi’s “Boulevard” program.

When asked whether it is possible to increase the wages of Basque workers without violating state law, Lakuntza assured that this is achievable through “a political agreement”, as it is legally “very difficult”. In that sense he has appeal to EH Bildu and the PNV to “take advantage of the parliamentary reality” that exists in Congress – PSOE and United We Can need support to pass the budgets -. The ELA leader has asked both formations if “they are going to do anything to regain the self-government they have taken from us.” As he has emphasized, “they must raise their voices and mark a tension” before “the state empties the Basque Statute with basic laws”.

After stressing that “there are companies that have never made as much money as this year,” Lakuntza . claimed a change in tax, so that the companies with the most benefits are the ones that pay the most. “It’s music that sounds from Europe, but isn’t heard here,” he lamented. For example, he has denounced that in the Basque Country the largest companies, such as Petronor or Iberdrola, are the ones that contribute the least, as they pay only 7.6% of their profits thanks to “fiscal engineering. We demand a minimum effective interest rate of 25 %,” he clarified.
