Wirtschaftsbund affair – “Defense structure has completely collapsed”

Date:

The arguments of Markus Wallner and the ÖVP no longer hold, says the opposition at the federal and state level. They’re keeping the option of a commission of inquiry in Vorarlberg open.

“The defense structure is completely crumbling. The ÖVP story that these are just anonymous allegations doesn’t work anymore,” said NEOS councilor Gerald Loacker after the latest developments in the Vorarlberger Wirtschaftsbund advertising affair became known.

Now that the name of the entrepreneur who heavily accused Governor Markus Wallner is known to the Public Prosecution Service for Economic Affairs and Corruption (WKStA), he would expose himself to the risk of punishment if he made false accusations.

Moreover, every defense argument so far has proved false magic: “The Wirtschaftsbund will have to pay more than 900,000 euros in taxes. Even exchanging the cell phone was not a routine exchange,” Loacker digs into the unhealed wounds.

SPÖ mandate Reinhold Einwallner sees his opinion confirmed. “I’ve always said it’s just an anonymous ad, so an obscured name.” The fact that this is now known to the WKStA may help shed more light on the dark stories. “It’s a shame that Markus Wallner is doing so little to clear things up,” he said.

He estimates the possibility that this could take place in the ÖVP’s corruption investigation committee in Vienna as quite low. “The biggest stumbling block here is the NEOS, who have spoken out against an extension of the U-commission,” he laments. Apparently the subject of control is no longer so important to NEOS.

In the country, these tasks would mainly lie with the largest opposition party and therefore with FPÖ leader Christof Bitschi. Due to the latest developments, he sees a U-committee in the Vorarlberg state parliament getting closer and closer. “However, the rules have yet to be revised. With the current mechanisms it is a toothless U-board. And the ÖVP is really on the brake.”

As for the latest development, he also sees the ÖVP defense construct destroyed. The story of the sniper was disproved, it was the turn of the investigating authorities.

National councilor Nina Tomaselli also refers to this. “The findings are of course also interesting for the U-committee in Vienna, because if the entrepreneur testifies, he does so under a duty of truth,” emphasizes the Green Member of Parliament.
