However, the president of the Generalitat has insisted that “there is still a long way to go” to the “complete injustice of the conflict” and has announced that the maximum sentence for aggravating public disorder will be increased from 6 to 5 years.

The President of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, has reviewed the reform of the crime of sedition announced yesterday by Pedro Sánchez, who described it as “a important step to stop the repression against the independence movement, a step towards dejudicialization”.
During a performance in the Gothic gallery of the Palau de la Generalitat, Aragonès warned that: more steps are needed to move forward on this path and that the government will do everything in its power to allow Catalonia in future to participate “without police brutality” in a referendum “to which both sides accept the result”.
Aragonès has assured that the elimination of sedition is the result of: an agreement between the Generalitat and the Spanish government, and has defended that it helps those convicted of 1-O since, if the Supreme Court held that the events of 2017 were not public disorder but rather sedition, now “it is not his opinion will change ” .
“With the withdrawal of sedition, it is more difficult to persecute the independence movement unfairly and arbitrarily,” he argued. At the same time, he recalled that the current crime of sedition “deviates far from European and international standards, as the Council of Europe and UN agencies have reminded us.”
However, he acknowledged that “there is still a long way to go” until the “complete end of the conflict” without giving up the amnesty. In addition, he explained that there are still “open questions in the parliamentary process” of the reform of the Criminal Code, referring, for example, to embezzlement.
“More needs to be done,” the president said, stressing that the most pertinent right now is that “the crime of sedition has been expunged, removed from the criminal code,” and replaced by “worsened public order“, a concept that now “already exists”, although “the maximum penalty” goes from six to five years”.
Finally, he wanted to separate the agreements from any other issue, as the resolution of the conflict is not about “an agreement of the parties or acronyms”, but “is about rights and freedoms”.
