According to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, EU heads of state and government should not try to reach a decision on accession negotiations with Ukraine at the upcoming EU summit.
In a letter to EU Council President Charles Michel, Orbán wrote that “the apparent lack of consensus” would “inevitably lead to failure.” The summit will take place on December 14 and 15 in Brussels.
Hungary will soon join the EU
War-torn Ukraine hopes for a quick start to accession negotiations, but Hungary is stalling.
At the same time, right-wing conservative politician Orbán has not fundamentally rejected Ukraine’s possible accession to the EU in the future. As a first step, he spoke out in favor of concluding a “strategic partnership agreement” with Ukraine at the upcoming EU summit, according to the Hungarian state news agency MTI.
This agreement could have a term of “five to ten years”. “If we see that we can work together, we should raise the issue of membership again,” but that won’t be the case for “many, many years.”
