A boy (10) died in a serious bus accident in Sehmatal, Germany. The bus collided with a winter service vehicle on Tuesday morning and then hit a tree head-on (see video above).
The impact was so severe that the front two meters of the bus was completely destroyed. A student (10) was killed in the accident shortly before the town of Cranzahl. According to Chemnitz police, he died at the scene of the accident despite resuscitation measures. Two adults, the bus driver (45) and another passenger (59), were seriously injured. Eleven other passengers aged between ten and 39 were also injured. One girl with minor injuries is still in hospital for observation, the others have already been able to leave.
Crisis team on site
Saxony police tweeted that they were on site with emergency services to care for those affected, family members and witnesses. A crisis intervention team was also involved. The material damage amounts to approximately 100,000 euros. Richterstrasse between the B95 and the Cranzahl entrance was completely closed. The investigation into the exact cause of the accident was still ongoing on Tuesday afternoon.

Ice on many roads
According to the police’s initial assessment, the road in the Sehmatal in Germany’s Ore Mountains was slippery at the time of the accident. Rain caused icy conditions on many roads in the high regions of Saxony on Tuesday morning.
“The precipitation was changed from snow to rain on Monday by a layer of warm air at about 1,500 meters altitude,” said Florian Engelmann of the German weather service. If the rain then falls on cleared, exposed roads, which have temperatures below zero degrees, especially at high altitudes, it becomes extremely slippery.
