In the war against radical Islamist Hamas, the Israeli army has significantly expanded its offensive in the southern Gaza Strip. This also means an increasing danger to the civilian population (see also video above). According to the WHO, the situation is becoming increasingly unbearable. “Every ten minutes a child or young person is killed in Gaza,” a WHO representative in the coastal region said on Tuesday.
UNICEF spokesman James Elder criticized Israel’s call for people to leave neighborhoods and go to safe zones. There are no safe zones in the Gaza Strip, Elder said via video link from Cairo. Such areas should have health facilities, water and food, but they are only small waste areas, or sometimes just sidewalks. “I think the authorities know this and I find that heartless. It is the root of indifference towards children and women, and this indifference is deadly.”
Israel denies calls to evacuate the camp
Instead of delivering medical supplies, the WHO also had to rush to evacuate two warehouses in the southern city of Khan Younis. This was suggested to her by the Israeli army, pointing out that the camps were in a part of the city where fighting was likely.
The WHO has found a smaller storage facility near Rafah and has already moved 90 percent of the material, Peeperkorn said. The Israeli army denied on Monday that it had called for the camps to be cleared.
“Horror scenes” in hospitals
Peeperkorn spoke of “horror scenes” in the few remaining hospitals. They often have more than twice as many patients as beds. Patients lie on the floor with serious injuries and cannot be treated. Of the 3,500 hospital beds that existed before the start of the war on October 7, less than 1,500 are still in use.
