Cough, runny nose, fever! Flu infections, the real flu and Corona mean that many people are currently ill and have to stay in bed. This of course also has consequences for the disease rates in Upper Austria, which are higher than has been the case for a long time.
The number of absenteeism due to illness in Upper Austria remains very high. Last week (week 48), 58,777 insured persons (employed and unemployed) were reported sick to the Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK) alone. That was 4,000 more than two weeks ago. Last year there were 2,000 fewer, namely 56,870. Most of the sick people – 17,159 – are suffering from a flu-like infection, while 83 people have contracted the real flu. However, that is two fewer than two weeks ago.
Many corona diseases
The number of corona diseases has risen sharply: after 5,718 in calendar week 47, there were already 7,434 the week before. For comparison: last year there were ‘only’ 2,941 at the same time.
Doctors recommend vaccinations
“We are currently in the middle of the cold season. Protective measures are therefore urgently needed. The weather promotes the transmission of cold-resistant viruses such as influenza. Well-known strategies such as washing hands thoroughly and wearing a face mask on public transport are recommended. And of course, vaccinations against Covid-19 and flu also provide reliable protection against prevailing diseases,” emphasizes ÖGK chief physician Andreas Krauter.
