The US has imposed sanctions on the head of the Belarusian Red Cross, accusing him of involvement in the alleged kidnapping of Ukrainian children. As the US Treasury Department announced on Tuesday, Dmitry Shauzu will be sanctioned for supporting Russian children’s rights commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova. The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Lwowa-Belowa in March.
For the “war crime” of kidnapping thousands of Ukrainian children to Russia. Since the start of Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine in February 2022, Russia has been accused, with support from Belarus, of forcibly removing thousands of Ukrainian children from schools, hospitals and orphanages to Russian-controlled parts of the country.
Moscow does not deny the kidnapping
Moscow does not deny bringing Ukrainian children to Russia, but says it was done for their protection.
In July, there was sharp international criticism when Schauzu alleged that the Red Cross had been involved in transferring Ukrainian children from Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine to Belarus. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies called on the Belarusian Red Cross to dismiss Schauzu. Because this did not happen, the Federation suspended membership of the association.
Washington is increasing the pressure
Schauzu was one of eight people and 11 entities that the U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Tuesday. Washington wants to increase pressure on Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko.
