Things are getting politically heated in the country of EU accession candidate Albania. Opposition politician Flamur Noka tried to set a fire in the middle of parliament for the second time on Monday. The chairs were already stacked like fuel.
Noka is certainly not prudish in the political debate and takes drastic measures in the parliament in Tirana. The deputy of the Democratic Party, Albania’s main opposition party, lit a colored smoke bomb and also set fire to paper as a sign of protest.
Noka refuses to leave and lights a fire
As dozens of security guards surrounded the room, opposition MPs stacked chairs on top of each other. Some officers then clashed with the guards, while Noka fired an orange flare.
He was immediately expelled from the meeting, but refused to leave and set fire to paper, with which he attempted to set fire to the chairs stacked on the pulpit. However, this action was not successful; the guards were able to quickly extinguish the fire.
Not the first such incident
Political chaos has been raging in Albania for months: similar scenes occurred a few weeks ago when members of the opposition Democratic Party fired smoke bombs into the plenary hall and started a small fire, which was quickly extinguished. The goal at the time was to avoid a budget vote.
The opposition accuses Rama and his Socialist Party of governing in an increasingly authoritarian manner. An accusation of corruption over an alleged real estate deal is also causing heated emotions.
