Kim Jong-un, the all-powerful man in North Korea, is extremely saddened by the declining birth rate in his country. At a national meeting of mothers in Pyongyang, the dictator even started crying. And the troubled people wept with him.
The UN has called for action to tackle the low birth rate. Preventing the decline and ensuring good childcare are issues that must be resolved in cooperation with mothers, Kim was quoted by state media on Monday.
No specific figures have been given
Kim did not give any figures. However, the United Nations Population Fund estimates that the fertility rate in the isolated country will reach 1.8 in 2023 – based on an assumed population of around 26 million. The fertility rate reflects the average number of children a woman will have during her lifetime if the current age-specific birth rate remains constant during her childbearing years.
In purely mathematical terms, in order for a country’s population not to shrink – without immigration – in highly developed countries, approximately 2.1 children would have to be born per woman.
North Korea has been suffering from chronic food shortages for years. The last time a national mother’s meeting was held there was in 2012.
