At least four people were injured, one seriously, in a suspected gun attack in central Brussels, according to police.
As a police spokeswoman told the AFP news agency on Wednesday evening, officers were alerted around 7:30 p.m. At that time, the suspected attacker(s) were already on the run. However, there is currently “no evidence of a terrorist act”.
The incident took place on Avenue de la Guldenvlies, a busy shopping street in the center of the Belgian capital. According to Belgian media, a shopping center had to be evacuated. Television images showed a large contingent of police vehicles and ambulances early in the evening.
October 16 attack
Belgium currently has the second highest terror alert level. On October 16, Brussels was startled by an Islamic attack. A Tunisian shot two Swedish fans and injured two other people during a European Championship qualifier between Belgium and Sweden in Brussels. The perpetrator was initially able to escape, but was tracked down and shot a day later by the Belgian police. The jihadist organization Islamic State (IS) later said the perpetrator was one of its fighters.
