Just eight hours after 32 refugees were arrested in Bleiburg, police stopped the journey of another smuggler. This time, officials found what they were looking for in a carriage at the Karawanken Tunnel border crossing in Carinthia.
Apparently hoping to “get lost” in the crowd, the seven Syrian men and four women and their five children (aged four to nine) boarded a Flixbus in Ljubljana, Slovenia, on Wednesday afternoon. But officials scrutinized the passengers of the Croatian bus at the Karawanken Tunnel border crossing in Rosenbach.
And exposed a total of 16 Syrian nationals without valid entry documents. The illegal immigrants all applied for international protection in Austria and were taken to the Klagenfurt immigration police station for further official procedures. The actual destination of the bus was Munich. It is unclear whether the Syrians actually wanted to go to Germany.

In any case, the 48-year-old driver continued driving with the other passengers during the identity check, but was followed by alerted officers and stopped in Lungau. The Bosnian was reported on suspicion of smuggling. It was the second attack that day by illegal immigrants on the Carinthian border. A few hours earlier, 32 refugees from Syria had been arrested in Bleiburg.
