According to the British government, the Russian secret service FSB has attempted to interfere in British politics with cyber attacks on politicians, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and journalists. The attacks are said to have been taking place since 2015.
“I can today confirm that Russia’s FSB security service is behind ongoing attempts to interfere in our democratic processes,” Foreign Secretary Leo Doherty told parliament in London on Thursday.
Attacks on parliamentarians since 2015
The government said: “While some attacks have led to documents becoming public, attempts to intervene in British politics and democracy have been unsuccessful.” The attacks on MPs from all parties have been taking place since at least 2015.
The “Center 18” department of the FSB, the successor to the KGB, the former domestic and foreign secret service of the former Soviet Union, is responsible. The attacks were carried out by the hacker group Star Blizzard, also known as Callisto Group.
The Russian ambassador was summoned
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian ambassador and imposed sanctions on those involved. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak told journalists he trusted the protection mechanisms and was confident he himself would not be affected by the hacker attack.
