The post office’s general manager, Georg Pölzl, has handed out a small gift to about 20,000 employees in recent days. However, the well-intentioned action backfired seriously. The manufacturer had apparently printed an incorrect expiration date on the mini Guglhupf.
“Attention – expired goods,” warned Franz Mähr, member of the Vorarlberg postal union, on his Facebook page. And some gifts even had an expiration date of November 30 or December 6. It didn’t take long for the employees to respond. “No problem, you can still eat,” said one. “Maybe it’s been in the mail for so long?” or “The expired ones were half price,” the others noted.
The campaign was actually doubly well-intentioned: as part of an internal competition, post office employees could register to participate in the baking campaign together with their top boss. The baking took place at the Vienna full board establishment, whose leading figures have been campaigning against elderly poverty, isolation and the growing generation gap since 2012.
Manufacturer’s error
Post press officer Michael Homola spoke about a successful evening, during which various Bundt cakes were made. “Our boss had no hand in the actual production.” The 20,000 units shipped were actually produced by the company and were apparently mislabeled. “For a batch of 200 pieces, the expiration date was not printed, but the day of production. The goods are certainly not spoiled,” he clarified.
In the general confusion surrounding the expiration date, the postmaster’s Christmas message was more or less lost. A QR code on the Gugelhupf bag leads to Vienna’s full board page, which not only advertises a “baking course with Georg” on November 22, but also shows a video with Georg Pölzl. He thanks the employees for a “difficult but very successful year”.
A few people from Vorarlberg didn’t want to see it anymore. Instead, they were appalled by the size of the 40 gram ‘bundt cake’ and expressed their anger on social media: ‘Once again you can see how out of touch these people are. This is not a gift, this is a provocation. All employees must return this so-called gift, by freight post, to this gentleman.”
