Hole found – burst water pipe in Hofburg: “Good luck with setbacks”

Date:

Fortunately, the burst water pipe in the Hofburg area of central Vienna caused only minor damage. On Wednesday afternoon, a pipe with a diameter of 30 centimeters burst, temporarily flooding the Binnenburghof, the Schweizerhof, the passage to Michaelerplatz and parts of Heldenplatz.

“The building structure was in no way endangered,” a spokesperson for the castle authorities emphasized in an interview with the APA on Thursday. There were minor water leaks in the basement in three isolated places. The sensitive plaster figure collection was located in an affected area.

“We have put the numbers aside,” the spokesperson said. The figures that could not be moved were wrapped in plastic sheeting to protect them from the water. In general you have to say: “We were lucky in the face of adversity.”

The clean-up work continued on Thursday. The hole was found and the water pipe was repaired. To repair an electrical cable you still need a spare part. “The road will be open again within a few hours.”

The repair work on the courtyards will take a little longer. Depending on weather conditions, the Hofburg area should be fully accessible again by the middle of next week.
