A baby weighing more than five kilograms was born in the Bremen-Nord clinic. Jonah weighed 5,100 grams at birth and was 59 centimeters long. Despite his size, he was born naturally.
“This is really very special,” says senior doctor Remy Malo. Babies weighing more than 4000 grams are considered above average weight. Only about one in a thousand children weighs 5,000 grams. “But here too we try to make a natural birth possible. The fact that things went well here is just great for the family, but also for us as a hospital team,” says Malo. Despite being heavier, the risk of caesarean section or birth injuries is only slightly increased.
Multiple reasons
According to the hospital, reasons for such a high weight may be that the mother is overweight, that she is older or that she has diabetes. However, this was not the case with Jonah. “The baby just developed very well and quickly in the womb.”
