In the comparable period of 2022 there were 358 road deaths, in 2021 – when there were still temporary and regional exit and traffic restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic – 345.
For comparison: In the entire pre-Corona year 2019, there were 416 deaths. And 369 traffic fatalities in all of 2022 was the third lowest number of fatalities since 1950, according to the ministry.
Major growth in Styria
According to the Ministry of the Interior, there has been a particularly large increase in Styria this year – from 47 fatalities in the comparable period of 2021 to 77 so far this year. In Burgenland, the number of road deaths has more than doubled in the period in question – from eight in the second Corona year to currently 19. According to the final figures, Salzburg registered 23 deaths from the beginning of the year to December 10, 2021, 19 last year and this year 35.
