At least 23 people have been killed in a suicide attack on an army base in Pakistan. The attack took place early Tuesday morning near the border with Afghanistan. The newly emerged Tehreek-e-Jihad Pakistan (TJP) group, which is linked to the Pakistani Taliban, has claimed responsibility for the crime.
An official said many of the victims died in their sleep and were wearing civilian clothes. “We are therefore still trying to determine whether they are all military personnel.”
“Martyr attack” by new group
The TJP group said the “martyrdom attack” in Dera Ismail Khan district of northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province began around 2:30 am local time. The Pakistani army has not yet responded to the incident.
Wave of terror since the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan
Since the radical Islamist Taliban came to power in neighboring Afghanistan in August 2021, attacks and assaults suspected of being Islamically motivated have also increased sharply in Pakistan. Several attacks by the Pakistani Taliban group Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in recent months have mainly targeted police officers and other security forces.
