The ‘Gatorland Park’, a theme park, in the US state of Florida is currently receiving an unprecedented number of visitors. The reason for this is the youngest ‘world’s rarest alligator’, the first of its kind to hatch in captivity.
The so-called leucistic baby alligator has snow-white skin and brown eyes that will soon mutate to crystal blue – a rare sight. His species is distinguished from albinos by their normal skin scales, despite a defect in the pigment-producing cells.
With only six known specimens in the world, all born in the wild, the young female alligator is a real star. The zoo is now planning a special ‘reptile apartment’ for the new star to protect his sensitive skin.
The first leucistic alligator was not discovered in the US until 1987.
