Tuesday afternoon and evening there was a devastating storm in large parts of Austria. Heavy rains with hail and flooding caused enormous damage to domestic agriculture. In Burgenland, Carinthia, Styria and Tyrol, for example, the financial scale of the destruction ran into millions.
“The result of yesterday’s storm is a total agricultural damage of 1.8 million euros on an agricultural area of a total of 9,500 hectares,” said Mario Winkler, spokesman for the Austrian hail insurance company. According to an initial assessment, the state of Styria has been hit the hardest. But the storm also caused major damage in Carinthia and Tyrol on Tuesday afternoon.
50 liters of rain in 30 minutes
In Burgenland, more than 50 liters of rain fell in 30 minutes on Tuesday evening, mainly damaging arable crops such as soybeans, maize and pumpkins. “However, in the case of flooding, the problem is often self-inflicted. Due to advancing concreting, the amount of precipitation can often no longer seep away so intensely,” explains Winkler.
