A Dutch (21) migrant rushed across the state border to the Czech Republic with two accomplices after blowing up an ATM in Aigen-Schlägl. His car was rammed and the loot was confiscated. The criminal is now injured in a Czech hospital. His companions escaped on foot in the darkness.
And it went boom. Just one day after an ATM was blown up in Sparkasse Reichenthal/M. There was another crash on Thursday evening – this time in the Raiffeisenbank in Aigen-Schlägl. An ATM in the foyer was vandalized around 3:30 am. Windows shattered and furniture was torn.
Special forces lay in wait
Three masked men stole money from the ATM’s steel cassette, which had remained intact, put it in a bag they brought with them and fled in a high-powered car. This time, however, police officers from the Cobra special unit were quickly on their heels. They had positioned themselves near the border because they suspected that the perpetrators would soon strike again in the Mühlviertel after the fourth coup since August.
Car rammed
The perpetrators ran to the Oberhaag border crossing into the Czech Republic, pursued by Austrian special forces. The Czech executive was also warned. South of the Vltava reservoir in the town of Heuraffl (Prední Výton), they managed to ram the getaway vehicle and arrest one of the perpetrators, a 21-year-old Dutchman with Turkish roots, with injuries. His accomplice was able to escape on foot in the dark. However: The getaway car and the loot were seized. It is expected that the arrested man will be extradited soon. He is still in hospital and has not yet been interviewed. He may also have been involved in the explosion in Reichenthal and in a coup in St. Stefan-Afiesl.
Organized network with more than 500 criminals
“We have lurked for free several times in the past. “It was very important for motivation that there was success this time,” says Gottfried Mitterlehner, head of the state criminal investigation department, happily. Setting up the current trap was a huge effort with a lot of staff. “We have spared no effort and hope that this is a clear signal to the group of perpetrators that we will not accept something like this,” confirms state police director Andreas Pilsl.
Several teams are broadcast every evening
Both point out that it is a huge criminal network with more than 500 members that operates from Utrecht (Netherlands) – mainly in Germany. “This is an El Dorado with 60,000 ATMs. Several teams are broadcast from the Netherlands every evening. So far, Austria has only been mentioned in passing,” said Mitterlehner.
Rap songs glorify actions
The Dutch perpetrators are mainly migrants between the ages of 17 and 25 who load their cars with explosives and large amounts of fuel to ensure a longer escape. And they glorify themselves and their actions: “There are even some rap songs about it.”
