After a dispute over a bottleneck, the first Paxlovid tranche arrived in Austria

Date:

After a days-long dispute over the now rare Covid drug Paxlovid – krone.at reported – the repeat order from the manufacturer Pfizer, announced on Wednesday by the Ministry of Health, arrived in Austria on Friday.

“From today, the first deliveries of the new order will be distributed to both hospitals and pharmacies,” said the office of department head Johannes Rauch (Greens). “All orders throughout Austria will be delivered by Monday at the latest.”

“In recent days we have been able to largely supply the pharmacies with Paxlovid from hospital supplies,” it was explained. In the event of an infection, all patients would have quick access to important medications again. The Chamber of Pharmacists has also promised new monitoring to rule out bottlenecks in the future, the Ministry of Health reports.

Chamber of Pharmacists: “Provide a monitoring system”
“As with all medicines, shortages can only be prevented if sufficient goods are available in Austria. To ensure the supply of Paxlovid in hospitals, medical pharmacies and community pharmacies, it is therefore imperative that all actors in the supply chain jointly establish a monitoring system,” emphasizes the Chamber of Pharmacists in a statement, which is not only responsible for establishing one to monitor.

“The pharmacies are the last link in the chain, just before the patients. In order to guarantee pharmacists a full supply of Paxlovid, it is necessary that wholesalers are informed in a timely manner when stocks run out. Only then can the federal government or social security, with sufficient prior notice, order additional packaging,” according to the Chamber of Pharmacists.
