For its part, Israel opened the Kerem Shalom crossing to the entry of humanitarian aid for the first time since October 7, fulfilling a commitment it made with the United States on Friday.
The Palestinian Red Crescent denounced this Sunday that only 10% of the aid needed to meet the needs of the population of the Palestinian enclave has entered the Gaza Strip.
“How many trucks carrying aid have entered the Gaza Strip since the escalation began? How is the aid distributed? The aid received covers less than 10 percent of the needs. The Palestinian Red Crescent calls for continued and unconditional assistance in the Gaza Strip.” Gaza,” the humanitarian organization published on its account on X, formerly Twitter.
From October 21 to September 16, some 4,637 trucks entered the Rafah crossing, 60% of which correspond to the Palestinian Red Crescent, the group pointed out.
Of these shipments, 49% are food, 20.3% relief supplies, 11.7% medical supplies and 19% water.
The United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Middle East, UNRWA, has also denounced that Gaza is “becoming a cemetery for the population caught between war, siege and deprivation.” “No aid can be delivered under bombardment skies,” warned UNRWA spokesperson Juliette Touma.
The UNRWA Commissioner himself, Philippe Lazzarini, has pointed out that “he had never seen anything of this level.” “The number of deaths in forty days is unprecedented. More women and children than in the war in Ukraine,” he complained.
Lazzarini also recalled that more than 60% of the infrastructure has been destroyed. More than 90% of the population has been displaced. “The number of UN personnel killed is unprecedented,” he stressed. “The sanitary conditions are terrible. There is hardly any clean water. Black water appears in the shelters,” he added.
Israel, for its part, announced this Sunday that it has allowed 79 trucks of humanitarian aid to enter the Gaza Strip through the Kerem Shalom border crossing, fulfilling a commitment it made with the United States on Friday. It is the first time the border has been opened since the bombings began.
