After the parliamentary elections in Serbia, Russia congratulated the incumbent President Aleksandar Vucic. “We welcome Mr Vucic’s success,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. Moscow hopes that the “path of strengthening friendship and our cooperation” will continue.
Peskov also described Serbia as a “brotherly” country. Russia and Serbia traditionally have a close relationship.
After counting more than 90 percent of the votes, two polling institutes in Belgrade saw the right-wing populist ruling party “Serbian Progressive Party” clearly ahead. However, election manipulation cannot be ruled out.
Belgrade is a candidate for EU membership and has condemned Russia’s attack on Ukraine at the United Nations, but has not joined Western sanctions on Russia. Serbia is almost completely dependent on Russian natural gas.
Serbia supports Russia
In Serbia, a significant part of the population supports Russia’s military actions in Ukraine and shares its antipathy towards NATO and its support for Kiev.
On the other hand, countless Russians who reject the Ukraine offensive have left for Serbia. It is one of the few remaining European countries with direct flights to Russia.
