Trial in Feldkirch – Attempted murder: 17 years in prison for Syrians

Date:

Act of jealousy: Syrian assistant chef rammed a kitchen knife into the stomach of his colleagues in the accommodation. He had to answer for this at the regional court on Monday.

In the Feldkirch regional court on Monday, after just over an hour of deliberation, the verdict against the 31-year-old assistant chef was handed down: seventeen years in prison for attempted murder.

By a vote of 8-0, the jury found it proven that the Syrian, who had two previous convictions to his name, wanted to kill his 48-year-old colleague with a targeted stab in the stomach in early January. The jury unanimously denied that the suspect could have acted in self-defense. With the verdict, the Senate followed prosecutor Simon Mathis’ call for a severe sentence.

Acted out of jealousy
About the case: It happened on the night of January 7 to 8 in the employee accommodation of a hotel. At that time, the 31-year-old assistant cook shared the building with the later victim, a 48-year-old Nigerian and a colleague. Both men approached the woman. But she refused.

Nevertheless, she maintained a friendly relationship with the later victim. Too much for the 31-year-old Syrian. Because he didn’t like the fact that the Muslim woman was in his ‘competitor’s room’, he kicked in his door that night. As the woman fled, the situation between the men escalated.

In his plea yesterday, prosecutor Simon Mathis condemned the treachery with which the suspect committed the crime. He once again reminded the Senate of the victim’s statements: “He came to me and said that we were brothers, that he was sorry about the door and that he would fix it. Then he hugged me and stabbed me.”

The victim survived thanks to emergency surgery
The perpetrator fled, but was arrested shortly afterwards. The murder weapon, a kitchen knife with an eight-inch blade, was found in a stream. In any case, the jury did not believe the suspect’s version that he did not remember being stabbed in the stomach and that the victim may have encountered him. The sentence of 17 years in prison is not final.
