A student died under the rubble when a boarding school in Romania collapsed on Monday. This was reported by the media, citing the rescue team. The building suddenly collapsed, for reasons that are still unclear. Another student who was buried is in life-threatening condition. Two other students were only slightly injured.
A total of four teenagers between the ages of 15 and 17 were buried under the rubble. Canal works near the old building may have caused the collapse, district prefect Noemi Zörgö explained.
Building partially renovated
The institution belongs to the region’s famous, now state secondary school “Tamasi Aron”, founded by Jesuits in the 16th century in Odorheiu Secuiesc, Transylvania, where the majority of ethnic Hungarians live. The school building was considered to be at low risk in an earthquake, but has recently been partially renovated.
The boarding school was built at the beginning of the 20th century and, according to Prefect Zörgö, had a good operating permit. It was not checked whether there was a risk of earthquakes here. It belongs to the Catholic Church and was rented by the municipality.
In Romania, parents, teachers and politicians have been complaining for years about the poor state of school infrastructure. Accusations of negligence and bribery have often been leveled against regulatory bodies in the construction industry.
