Seven robberies at gas stations, a betting shop and a tobacconist – the Styrians spent the loot in the brothel not only on alcohol and drugs.
A polite, apparently reformed man sat before the lay court in Eisenstadt. “Everything is unforgivable! The acts were incredibly bad. But what I did to the victims is even worse,” said the 35-year-old, who earned 2,800 euros a month as a construction worker and still had 35,000 euros in debt. A car on credit, alimony, gambling addiction, gambling debts and brothel visits are said to have contributed to this. “That’s where I came into contact with cocaine. Plus the alcohol because I wanted to escape from reality – then I was a real monster.”
Black painted toy gun
The suspect is accused of seven robberies in Burgenland and Styria, starting on March 18, 2023 with an attack on a betting shop in Oberwart. Five were successful. He always went hunting with a toy gun, the barrel of which he had painted black to make it look more realistic, and threatened the employees with it.
Traumatized employees
Four women were so traumatized that they subsequently had to seek therapeutic help. They were awarded a total of 6,900 euros in compensation, which the robber accepted on the advice of his lawyer Ina-Christin Stiglitz. “It is important for me to make everything right,” said the perpetrator, who was arrested on August 11 after a miserable attempted robbery of a tobacco shop in Graz. The day before, he had entered the store with his gun at 6 p.m. The operator credibly assured him that the register was already closed. The much-derided surveillance video went viral online (see video) and the search was quickly successful.
Five years in prison for serial robber
The seven robberies involved serious physical injury and one case involved serious coercion. The man pushed his estranged wife against a box. And he took the cell phone of a lady who wanted to call the police and threw it in the canal.
With a prison sentence of ten years, the previously blameless Styrian received exactly half of that. Not legally binding.
