No ‘winter festival’ etc. – Meloni’s party wants to protect traditions at school

Date:

The right-wing party Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy in German, note) wants to protect traditions in schools. For example, Christmas celebrations should not be renamed ‘winter festivals’. Easter and other celebrations must also be preserved.

The bill that the party under the leadership of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has submitted to parliament provides, among other things, for the setting up of nativity scenes. Christmas plays, plays and other events related to traditional celebrations should also be protected. If a school director does not comply with the law, he or she can be punished.

Criticism from the opposition and school leaders
Sharp criticism of the plan came from the opposition and the Association of Italian Headmasters. “The traditions of the country must certainly be taken into account, but imposing them by law is inappropriate,” said the head of the national association of school principals ANP, Antonello Giannelli.

The president of the association of school principals “DirigentiScuola”, Attilio Fratta, even described the design as a “sham”. It only serves to distract the public’s attention from the real problems of the school and the country. The Italian opposition finds the plans ‘ridiculous’. It is not yet known when parliament will discuss the bill.
