Authorities in Kosovo have lifted a border ban on vehicles and goods from Serbia that was imposed three days ago. Trucks and cars from Serbia are now more strictly controlled by Kosovo border officials, but they are allowed to pass through again.
The government in Prishtina last Wednesday ordered a border ban on Serbian goods and vehicles after Serbia had previously arrested three Kosovo police officers. According to the Kosovo report, they had been kidnapped from Kosovo. Belgrade claimed they had invaded Serbia.
Warning from KFOR protection force
The NATO-led security force KFOR announced in Prishtina on Friday evening that after investigating the incident it was unable to determine whether the arrest of the three police officers took place on Kosovo or Serbian territory. She reminded both sides to coordinate the actions of their security forces in the border area with KFOR. This did not happen in this case.
KFOR, currently involving more than 270 Austrian soldiers, has been responsible for overall security in Kosovo since 1999. Tensions between Serbia and Kosovo have been rising for months. Clashes or acts of violence against officials and journalists occur almost daily in northern Kosovo, which is inhabited almost exclusively by Serbs. Kosovo, now almost exclusively inhabited by Albanians, declared independence in 2008. Serbia does not recognize this and demands the return of its former province.
